ABU Show #65 TONITE

Tonight (Thursday), the ABU Podcast returns to burn.
Two hours of funky hip hop, breaks, electro and the usual idiocy you've come to know and love.

Trot along to this link at 9pm and press play to hear the show.
In fact the link will be live a little before that to give you time to download it to your device if you want to get it ready to roll at the official show time.

Big thanks to DJ SUPER JB for providing a devastating mix for tonight's show.
And a massive thanks to LG for his input into the above flyer.

ABU #65 Teaser Trailer & Flyer

So it's been a while since we at ABU hit you up with a podcast. With this in mind the cogs began turning in the collective ABU creative machine and before you know it - BAMM! - Podcast #65 is just about ready to roll.

Actually the truth is that I have been putting it together since the beginning of the year but very slowly.
At this point I'm unsure as to either broadcast it (it's a pre-record) next Thursday at 9pm via Mixlr - remember Disco Scratch and their servers are now no longer around - or otherwise upload it to the usual spot - hearthis.
I shall proceed to do a test broadcast to see if I can still bag my free 2 hours - Mixlr usually lets you have one hour free and that's it without a premium account, however ABU seems to have flown under that particular radar and can get away with 2 hours +.

Anyhoo, due to the importance of this event we can proudly present to you a little trailer knocked up to get your tastebuds going in anticipation.
And not only that but a rather dope and phenomenal flyer as well. I came up with the idea of a Star Wars theme and was all going well until I hit the brick wall which was involving some sort of b-boy character.
There was only one choice of who to involve and that was the masterful LG of Digging 4 Victory/Style Warrior. LG provided us with the amazing character design you can see here and quite frankly if this doesn't get snapped up and made into this year's top-selling Xmas toy then there is no justice in the world.

Keep your ears open and I'll let you know the outcome of when/how to hear Podcast #65.
If you are 'following' ABU on Mixlr then you may get a notification that we are performing a test broadcast soon. Don't get excited as it will be just that. I may not even run any audio either.

Take it easy,
Cakemaster Repo

Steinski - Red Bull Academy

Here's a video from 2003 featuring Steinski in conversation with some odd choice of guy ("Jeff “Chairman” Mao") who seems to always do these Red Bull interviews.

Steve 'Steinski' Stein is a personal hero of mine and so I will always make time to check out anything featuring the guy.
This talk is pretty in-depth and Stein always keeps the mood light and entertaining whilst giving up lots of interesting nuggets of knowledge about his catalogue of work.

Big shout to Irish Craig & Dayle for finding this.

New York Graffiti Experience ©1976

Filmed in 1976 - a full 5 years before Stations of the Elevated - this brief documentary takes an unbiased look at the then burgeoning graffiti scene in New York City.
Some nice shots of the city and people as well as the pieces themselves are shown here with words from CLIFF of the Three Yard Boys (3YB)

I really love the song that plays throughout - 'Call Me French Fry 97' - which is a slice of pure 70s singer-songwriter, faux-funk which is told from a writer's point of view. Bizarrely brilliant.

N.b. If this is your bag then you need to check the films on this previous ABU post (all links still working there as of today).

Sound of Song - BBC iPlayer....quick!

I happened to come across this tonight on BBC4.
A brief 60 minutes of recent music technology by way of 1970s' prog rock, disco and a neat bit of New York hip hop history (with Hank Shocklee - pictured). The programme host even goes to East River and stands at the famous Ampitheatre featured in Wild Style.

Check it out here but be quick about it as it will disappear in 29 days from today.

Composer and musician Neil Brand's series exploring the alchemy that creates great songs reaches the modern era, when a revolution in how they were made took place. From the synthesisers of symphonic rock to the mixes of disco and the samplings of hip hop, music was transformed by the arrival of digital technology and the computer, which gave some songwriters more power but others much less. Along the way Neil talks synths with Rick Wakeman from Yes, samples with Public Enemy's Hank Shocklee, uncovers the surprising lo-fi origins of Bruce Springsteen's stadium-busting Born in the USA, and finds out how Cher changed the sound of her voice on the smash hit Believe.
