Disco Scratch ABU! Takeover DOWNLOAD - November 2011

In the house...
It was another roadblock in the Disco Scratch chatroom last night with some new faces joining the usual suspects which was really good to see.
The banter was as good as could be expected with everyone on their best behaviour as not to frighten any newbies away.
Or not.

Some particular 'highlights' of chat include.....

" i over heard my neighbour tell some one when she had her kid she split from her fanny to her arse... her words" (Jim_Cee)

"The popemobile is very environmentally friendly... it runs on the tears of abused alter boys" (Wax_At_The_DOV)

"all this intellectual conversation, bromance and general bumming" (InchHigh)

"it's all in Thora, I've got no more" (Jim_Cee)

"Yeah this MOvember thing, I only heard about it on Saturday... so I started to let my bollock hair grow if anyone's interested (normally I'm a shaver raver)" (Wax_At_The_DOV)

Two hours of smokin' hot tracks with Serial Killa and Black Nostaljack getting a particular favourable thumbs-up. And when the main show had ended, my man Waxer jumped on to give us more of what we need and slammed on some rarely-heard early productions and demos from the House of Wax.

Remember, it always pays to listen live for the extra bits at the end which are strictly NOT included on the download. You fassyholes.

Future Radio ABU! Takeover - Taking Over Your Radio AGAIN!

ABU! is back and live on the wheels of steel tonight on DJ Just-1's Hip Hop Sessions show on Future Radio.
Tune in at 10pm for 2 hours of solid old school hip and breaks as I've been graciously allowed to return to the studio to perform yet more dodgy mixing and for the masses.

And of course a big shout to everyone who made it to the last No Half-Steppin night on Saturday with Just-1, Chrome spinning and special guest DJ JU-E from the FGM Crew who dropped some Random Rap and executed some ill scratches on top.
Next month's event is the Xmas Special and is set to blow to roof off with special guest PA's as well as yours truly guesting on the wheels. More news on this very soon.

Disco Scratch Needs Your Help

For all of us religiously following the weekly Disco Scratch Radio show, you'll know that things haven't been rolling smoothly since the summer. The following is an open letter from the head honcho, Waxer........

Dear all Ageing B Boys & Fly Girls... an open letter to you. The POV was silenced 6 weeks ago and working an 80 hour week at the moment is kinda hard to fit anything else in... also recently had to sell all my gear so nothing to broadcast on... HOWEVER... I would dearly love to get back on air and I'm just asking something of you all... If I asked you lot to blindly donate some money to the Disco ...Scratch cause until I got to £170 which is what I need to pay for stuff to get broadcasting again, would you consider making the donation?

Every person who donates will get a bundle of niceness in the post and when I'm back on my feet a little bit, the freeness will continue with a second bundle out to fans of Ageing B Boys Unite! and Disco Scratch... not forgetting the monthly Heroes of UK Hip Hop takeover shows I'll be starting up again... this post is just a discussion, so if you feel I'm taking the proverbial, please let me know, it's just a tester...

It'll just be a paypal thing until I get to the amount I need, I've got the rest of the money I need but I'm a bit short and can't justify the expense when I've got so many other outgoings... You will all be truly rewarded if you contribute and when I do the first Disco Scratch Records release (hopefully next year) you will be mentioned as a contributor in the sleeve notes...

I'm in this for the long haul, just had a little glitch at the moment, so please post your response below, if I get enough positive responses, I'll do it... I'll let it run a few days and see what you guys think. Disco Scratch is 3 years old this Christmas, let's see if we can roll FOREVER! Here's the Christmas show first podcast from 2008: http://discoscratch.co.uk/2008/12/24/disco-scratch-christmas-podcast-featuring-corrina-joseph/

This one featured the missus, just playing some breaks & beats to the breaks, you know the steez... Bigup all family and let's see if we can bond together to make this work, I PROMISE YOU, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED! Respect to all crew...

Any more information I get I will of course pass on to you fine folks. I think it goes without saying that our Thursdays have been that little bit darker recently - and that's not including the Daylight Saving shizzleness.

R.I.P. Heavy D

Rap legend, Heavy D aka Dwight Arrington Myers - as I'm sure you must know now - passed away yesterday (8th November 2011).
It seems almost pointless posting about something that you already are aware of because what else can I add?
I just feel I should acknowledge the passing of one of the true heavyweights (no pun intended) in our culture in some way.
He was one of the good guys and liked by everyone. He was one of the heavy-hitters (again, no pun intended) of the industry responsible for mentoring Sean 'Puffy' Combs, he was also behind the early career of Mary J Blige and was the cousin of Pete Rock, too.

It doesn't seem right. Well, it doesn't seem right when ANYONE goes, right? But in Hev's case it really was too early, he was only 44 years old and was still working hard in the industry.

Bizarrely, a friend of mine sent me a link to his latest blog entry which contained this video below earlier in the day. I didn't actually read the title. Well, I did, but it didn't register - 'Heavy D – His Final Interview…'. Obviously, viewing it after I had heard the news made watching it even more painful and poignant.
Westwood - who I seem to be coming round to more and more after all these years of being another 'hater' - is in fine form and chats happily to Heavy D about the birth of hip hop, the tragic passing of Troy, working with Jay-Z, producing, touring the UK, Teddy Riley and Pete Rock.

RIP Heavy D

Respex due...Irish Craig

Graffiti Writers Wanted!

My man, LG is currently on the lookout for writers for an upcoming project.
I'll let him takeover...

"I used to publish a graffiti fanzine nearly 20 years ago called ‘Art of Servival’, and now I am planning to resurrect it.
I’m looking for graffiti writers young and old or even retired to contribute to this project. The difference with this fanzine is that it will be text only… no photo’s.
I want to hear any funny / interesting stories that you may have from your time as a writer. You can write as little or as much as you like, you really have a total free reign.
I’ve put the feelers out and have some positive feedback, with a promising list of writers keen to get involved… some you may never heard of, others you would definitely have.
You can read more details here, please get in touch if you want to get involved."

You know how dope his designs are already so expect the re-dux fanzine to be just as well-produced.
I , for one, would love to read about stories of writers' escapades from the train yards and crazy cops all from back in the days. So get in touch with him if you have a story or two.
LG is hoping to get the first issue done by the end of 2011and aiming to make it 52 pages, A5 and printed in Black and White photocopy format. Old school ;-)

And hopefully the 'zine will be a *little* bit cheaper than a certain other premium graff mag out there at the moment (cough, Gr*ph*tizm, cough).

UK Fresh 86 Facebook Group

There's a nice group on Facebook dedicated to the legendary event UK Fresh 86. It's not new and has in fact been going for quite a while but as of late is enjoying a real boost thanks to some never-seen-before photos taken by a couple of members.

Were you there? Did you sneak a camera into the event? Or perhaps you just want to re-live some of the moments from the show. Or just see what all the fuss is about.
Check out the group here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/140553270289/

Respect to 'Godstone McGuires'.

What We're Gonna Do Right Here Is Go Back - #1 Grange Hill Honeys

I've been watching the whole of the legendary BBC1 kids drama, Grange Hill since the early part of this year. But more importantly my daughter has become a confirmed fan and relishes each episode.
We've just finished series 9 which - as many agree - is regarded as the Golden Age of GH.
Yes, the school fire, asbestos, fibre-glass attacks, Imelda and her Terrahawks gang, Ant Jones' singling-out by Mr Bronson, Miss Partridge the single mother (shock, horror), Fay and Mr King's exra-curricular liasons, the return of the school magazine, the Speaking Wall, Danny Kendal, Gonch & Hollo, new boy Ziggy Greaves, Gonch's Toast Bar, and course this series was the one that followed Zammo's downward spiral as he fell victim to a heroin addiction and subsequently found by Ro-land in the video arcade back room.

Ahhhh. Them were the days.
My daughters' eyes are constantly out on stalks whenever the scene is set in the school canteen as back in those days schoolkids could quite happily munch on crisps, Mars Bars and sip on Coke without being told to 'eat more healthily'. There was even salt, pepper, vinegar and a bottle of Heinz on them dinner tables!

For me though I must've stopped watching Grange Hill by about the 12th series in 1989. I know that later on it all went a bit poncey and I can recall that one teacher walked around the halls with some sort of early version of an iPad - this would've been in the early 2000's. The show always seemed to be banging on about softer subjects and the importance of being eco-friendly and 'green'. Never again would the 'Hill feature as hard-hitting a subject as drug abuse ever again.

Tell 'em about the honey, mummy.
Now, while I've been watching Series 12 I've noticed that there have been quite a lot of easy-on-the-eye ladies moreso than in earlier episodes. I remember harbouring a secret crush on Julia Glover (her dad was a busybody PTA member) as well as Georgina Hayes who was the love-interest of new-boy Ant 'Quiff/Mullet' Jones.
Of course I fancied Zammo's squeeze, Jackie Wright - who didn't? But then there was Caroline 'Calley' Donnington who really blossomed in later years (and subsequently dated film director Michael Winner!). And of course, before this there was Claire Scott who was going out with Stewpot. Who remembers what became of her? She did some modelling I seem to recall....

Watching Grange Hill seems to have been a rite-of-passage to most of us in that late 30's/early 40's stage. I couldn't say if it was as important to teenagers during it's last few years in the 2000's as it was to me when I was originally watching Series 9 aged 15. Probably not.

Anyhoo, I found a batch of pictures of some of the cast of GH at some reunion recently and thought I'd do a 'then and now' of some of the laydeez.
So below I present some of the Grange Hill Honeyz. Can you remember them all?
I didn't include Georgina as I couldn't locate a current pic of her, sadly.
And Imelda....? Hells yeah!

Jorun Bombay & Marley Marl - "The Symphony" (THE JORUN BOMBAY REMIX)

He's only gone and done it again.
Here's another Jorun Bombay remix this time using the acapella of The Symphony (where did he get that??!!) and taking it even further.
This bloke is seriously picking up Marley Marl's crown as far as I'm concerned.

Listen to this. Can I get a soul-braaap?

You need to hear more from Jorun.

AINT NO HALF STEPPIN

ITS YOURS

CHILDRENS STORY

And of course, PETER PIPER REMIX which is a stone-cold classic reworking.
